The Hieromartyr Theodor belongs to the rank of numerous holy martyrs, who were from the most ancient corner of Georgia - Adjara.
Saint Theodore Adjarian was born in the 70-80s of the 18th century. This was the time when the Ottoman conquerors almost completed the process of violent Islamization of this region, when all those who denied Islam were killed, and those families who accepted Islam, but were considered unreliable by the invaders, had to be relocated to other places. In one of such families, Saint Theodore was born.
It not clear when and how his family found themselves in Trabzon and how many years they lived far from home. It is known that Saint Theodore refused to accept Islam, and since it was dangerous in his motherland, he went to the city of Smyrna (Izmir), where he ws tonsured in one of the remaining Georgian monasteries. His nephew took Christianity as well. Soon, Saint Theodore became the Father Superior of this monastery.
In 1822, Saint Theodore decided to go to Mount Athos, to the Georgian monastery. It was the time of the national liberation war of the Greek people against the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans tried to pour blood on the Greeks' desire for freedom. The Ottoman troops surrounded Mount Athos as well. It was them who seized the monk who was going to Athos, and after a lot of humiliation and torture, they killed him. The atheists thrown his body into the sea.
